Eastern Cape police have arrested two men who allegedly robbed and then kidnapped a foreign shop owner in the Mthatha area this weekend.
Police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena, said that the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Maqhinebeni locality in the Qweqwe Administrative Area in Mthatha.
She said the three men had pretended to be customers before robbing the shop owner of an undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes, airtime, and his white Toyota bakkie.
Captain Koena said the robbers then forced the shop owner into their own vehicle, a green Toyota Conquest.
She said after police were alerted the suspects were pursued whereupon the kidnapped shop owner was “dumped at Qokolweni locality and his bakkie was found abandoned at the same locality”.
Koena said the suspects were eventually cornered by police at Tyumbu bridge. One is still at large.
“The suspects were found in possession of a 9mm Star pistol, with the serial number filed off, and eight rounds of ammunition. Their Toyota Conquest was also confiscated,” she said.
The suspects are due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate Court on Monday on charges of armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle, kidnapping, the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
