Two people are due to appear in court on Monday on public violence charges after police were attacked and stoned when they rescued two men from an angry mob in Kwanobuhle in Kariega.
Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said at the same time they are also investigating the death of one of the men who succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
She said the incident happened on Thursday when members of SAPS Kwanobuhle and Kariega K9 unit responded to reports of members of the community assaulting two men accused of theft.
“Police found two males lying tied up in Alexander Road, Area 11 at 09:55 on Thursday. It is further alleged that the group approached SAPS members and attempted to prevent police officers from removing the victims to receive the necessary medical attention,” she said.
Swart said bricks and stones were thrown at the police officials and their SAPS vehicles and the members managed to speed off from the scene with the injured, whilst the other SAPS members arrested the two.
She said the pair, 28 and 36, face charges ranging from public violence, assault on police officers, obstruction of justice, and damage to state property.
Swart said all leads are also being followed up to bring to book those responsible for the death of the 35-year-old man.
