Two people were killed in a shooting incident in Booysens Park, Port Elizabeth, over the weekend.
One man was allegedly shot in a suspected gang related shooting while the other is believed to have died following an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and a policeman.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, says the policeman who lives in the area placed himself on duty after hearing the gunshots in the early hours of Saturday morning.
She says upon investigation he saw a group of men standing around a man who was lying in Steenbras Street.
Janse Van Rensburg says one of the men allegedly fired several shots at the man on the ground, killing him.
She says the policeman then fired several shots in the direction of the suspects.
"The member called for backup and when the police arrived at the scene, one man believed to be the one shot by the suspects died on the scene and a few meters from the victim, another man suspected to be one of the suspects was found fatally wounded. Three other suspects were seen fleeing the scene in an unknown white vehicle," Janse Van Rensburg said.
She said "cases of murder and attempted murder for police investigation. An Inquest docket (relating to the death of the suspect) will be handled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation."
