Two male police officers were killed and one female officer seriously injured when their van burst a tyre on Friday.
A Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose spokesperson says the officers were travelling on the R63 between Kwanojoli and Graaff-Reinet with two male detainees at the back when the accident happened.
He says the vehicle rolled several times and one male officer and the policeman who was driving died on the scene, while their female colleague sustained serious injuries.
The two detainees who were stuck in the back of the van also sustained injuries and were rescued by the first responders at the scene.
All the injured were taken to Midlands Hospital for medical attention.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
It is not yet clear where the detainees were being transported to and the names of the deceased officers cannot yet be released.
