A 62-year-old security guard from a school in Lusikisiki is in police custody following the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old learner.
Police spokepserson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the child was killed and his friend injured at the Matafeni Junior Secondary School on Thursday night.
She says it is alleged that a group of seven children tried to get into the school premises to access the Wi-fi when they were accosted by the security guard.
Colonel Naidu says when the kids saw the guard, they started running when he fired shots towards them.
She says the 13-year-old victim died at the scene while his friend was taken to hospital.
The guard is being charged with murder, attempted murder and for having a firearm with the serial number filed off.
He will make his first court appearance on Monday.
