A manhunt has been launched for two prisoners who escaped from the Ngqeleni Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape.
The two men escaped from the centre's sports field yesterday.
The Department of Correctional Services says Siyabulela Khohliso and Athini Mzingelwa were serving sentences of ten and eight years for rape respectively.
Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The latest escape comes amid a renewed focus on the criminal justice system following the escape of convicted murderer and rapist, Thabo Bester from the privately-run Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein.
Bester escaped from prison in May 2022 by faking his own death and was only recently rearrested in Tanzania.
