Two children killed in EC crash

Two children aged six and 12 were killed when a seven-seater Toyota Avanza with Cape Town registration plates overturned on the R-61 between Cradock and Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said the incident happened on Saturday night when it's suspected that the vehicle suffered a tyre burst.

"The remaining 12 passengers were transported to Cradock Hospital with serious injuries," he said.

Meanwhile, Bramwell said that authorities arrested a City to City bus driver for reckless and negligent driving as well as overloading.

"On Sunday morning in our Aliwal North area close to the provincial border with the Free State, our offices stopped a luxury coach traveling from the Eastern Cape to Gauteng.  The seating capacity of this bus is 62 but the bus had a total of 99 passengers on board," he said.

"This means that the bus was overloaded by 27 passengers including five minors.  The driver was arrested and detained at SAPS in Aliwal North," he said.

Bramwell said that the driver will appear in court on Monday.
