Two Bay students missing since Saturday's flash floods

Two students from EastCape Midlands College's High Street Campus have been missing since Saturday's flash floods in Kariega.

Assistant Director for Marketing and Communications Elmari van de Merwe says according to reports the female National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level 2 students, one from the Marketing programme and one from the Tourism programme were last seen leaving with a friend whose car was allegedly swept away by the floods.

She says, fortunately, the friend was rescued, however, there has been no sign of the two women.

Van de Merwe says the case was brought to their attention on Monday, prompting immediate action involving police.

She says SAPS rescue workers have since launched a comprehensive search and are treating the situation with the utmost priority.

The College has offered support to the community and is in constant communication with the students' family members.

Meanwhile, rescue workers are also searching for one person who tried to cross a river in Melbrooks in Kariega with a friend.

Spokesperson for Disaster Management Thomas Cameron says the friend managed to cross safely while his friend got swept away.

The death toll in the floods is standing at eight.
