Port Elizabeth police have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery at a shop in Greenbushes in which 49-year-old armed response officer, Rodrick Erasmus, was fatally wounded.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said one suspect was arrested on New Year’s Day at a house in Kwazakhele after a tip-off.
“The suspect was found with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen,” she said.
He was wounded by Erasmus during the robbery on 27 December before his accomplices shot and killed the Nitrous Security armed response officer.
Naidu said further information led police to a house in Joe Slovo in Kwadwesi where a 38- year-old man was arrested and a 9mm Vector firearm confiscated.
A bakkie was also seized.
Police said that according to information received a third suspect may have also been wounded in the abdomen and that further arrests are expected.
Naidu said the two men will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday on charges of murder, hijacking and business robbery.
The 38-year-old man will face an additional charge of the illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
