Two arrested for alleged involvement in Intercape bus attacks

Eastern Cape police have arrested two people whom they believe are linked to the spate of attacks on Intercape buses.

Spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the men, aged 26 and 37 were arrested over the weekend in the Cofimvaba CBD.

He says these two men allegedly confronted people who were waiting for the bus at one of the filling stations, before assaulting them and robbing them of their belongings.

Kinana says the incident was followed by an attack on the same bus between Tsomo and Ngqamakhwe, during which commuters were allegedly robbed and assaulted.

Intercape has over 130 cases open at various local police stations in the Eastern Cape as a result of attacks on their buses.

The company has even gone as far as suing the Minister of Police, Beki Cele for his alleged failure to stop these attacks.

Brig Kinana, however, says they have established a Task Team and deployed the Tactical Response teams and Flying Squad members on national roads to conduct highway patrols during the night.

He says their initiatives led to a significant decrease in the incidents.

Police will now investigate the two suspect's possible involvement in other Intercape attacks.

The men will appear in court on Tuesday on charges of assault, robbery and malicious damage to property.

In March, one passenger was shot and wounded when a bus came under attack on the same route.
