Two arrested after shooting on the N2 in Gqeberha

Members of the Kabega Park police station in Gqeberha have arrested two suspects, recovered a stolen vehicle, and confiscated two firearms following a brazen shooting on the N2 that ended in a fatal accident on Thursday.

The mayhem unfolded at around 4 pm on the N2 near Westering when two passengers who were traveling in a white Ford Ranger opened fire on four occupants in a silver VW Polo.

According to police, the driver of the silver VW Polo gave way when he noticed the driver of the Ford Ranger and another blue VW Polo behind him.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the driver of the VW Polo bumped into the Ford Ranger in an attempt to ward off his attackers.

"The driver of the Ford Ranger lost control and collided with a pillar under the bridge.

"The silver VW Polo continued driving when he noticed that the blue VW Polo that was traveling behind the Ford Ranger also came alongside him and fired shots at the silver VW Polo."

The driver of the silver VW Polo drove to Livingstone as two of the four passengers sustained gunshot wounds.

According to Janse van Rensburg, the driver of the blue VW Polo continued on the N2.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that one passenger from the Ford Ranger had fled the scene.

"The driver passed away and two more passengers in the Ford Ranger sustained injuries due to the accident," Janse van Rensburg said.

Two firearms with ammunition were confiscated at the scene.

Police could confirm that the Ford Ranger was stolen in Newton Street, in Newton Park in July.

The two suspects that were arrested are facing four charges of attempted murder, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition

The silver VW polo was impounded and a case of culpable homicide is also under investigation.
