Two appear in court for municipal fraud, corruption

July 22 (ANA) – Two people appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday, in connection with the fraud and corruption case involving the Executive Mayor of the Amathole District Municipality Nomasikizi Konza, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni said, Anitha Rulashe, 28, was arrested for fraud when her lawyer handed her over to the Hawks in East London on Friday. Rulashe was the fifth person arrested in the case.

"She is the co-accused of Khonza, 54, Naziwe Rulashe, 36, the former chairperson of the municipal Account Committee at Amathole District Municipality and councillor of Nkonkobe local Municipality, Sigcinile Mbixane, 31 and Mawande Njeza, 30," said Feni.

"Rulashe appeared before the East London magistrate on Friday and was released on a warning, she will however, appear in court with her other co-accused on September 5."

Feni said, Rulashe was arrested by the same unit of the Hawks which arrested one of her co accused when her lawyer handed her over to the Hawks office in East London.

Naziwe Rulashe was re-arrested on Friday after a warrant for arrest was issued by the same court after she failed to disclose previous convictions and previous cases during her bail application application in May 2016, Feni said.

Feni said Naziwe Rulashe admitted in court that she was convicted for theft in Cape Town in 2004, and she had a pending case against her for fraud in Pretoria. Investigations revealed that she is a wanted suspect for the Pretoria case.
