Police in Durban have arrested 20 people in connection with incidents related to protests within the trucking industry.
On Sunday afternoon the road to the Richards Bay harbour was blocked by 11 trucks which resulted in 11 arrests.
Spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker says another four suspects were arrested on Sunday evening for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
He says in the early hours of Monday morning five suspects were arrested at Estcourt near the Shell Ultra city as the vehicle they were travelling in was positively identified in a case where a truck was set alight. The men were also found in possession of receptacles containing petrol.
The Ministers of Employment and Labour, Police, Transport and Home Affairs convened an urgent meeting on Sunday night, to discuss the continued violence in the trucking industry and to plot a way forward.
In a joint statement, the ministries noted that incidents against drivers and their vehicles were turning more violent and criminal.
Last week Zambia's High Commission in Pretoria issued a travel advisory to citizens in the trucking industry to avoid travelling to South Africa on Monday.
The transport union - SATAWU has distanced itself from the action.
