Twelve prisoners awaiting trial on various offences escaped from the police holding cells in KwaBacha (formerly Mount Frere).
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says police noticed that the prisoners, who are believed to be dangerous, escaped through a hole in the wall in the early hours of Thursday morning.
She says officers were conducting their routine hourly cell visits when they discovered a hole in the wall.
Upon further investigation, it was established that the perimeter fence near the cell block was also cut.
Naidu says one of the escapees is wanted for rape, one for theft and one for burglary while nine others were in custody on charges of aggravated robbery.
She says an internal probe will be conducted on how the prisoners managed to escape and photographs will be circulated soon.
