Residents of Motherwell in Gqeberha torched two trucks during a protest on Tuesday morning over the lack of electricity.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said one truck driver was on his way from Markman Township to Addo at around 6 am when he was confronted by the protesters who stoned his vehicle.
She said he was forced out of the vehicle and the truck was driven to an informal settlement in Ikamvelihle where it was set alight with its cargo of groceries and other items valued at R100 000.
“A case of vehicle hijacking was opened at SAPS Ikamvelihle,” she said.
Naidu said a second truck was also set alight at the entrance to the Coega Recruitment Centre.
No arrests were made, but cases of malicious damage to property are under investigation.
Police said municipal officials were locked in a meeting with the residents on Tuesday afternoon.
