A truck was torched and petrol bombs reportedly thrown at motorists on the N2 in Port Elizabeth as protests by some residents of Wells Estate continued into Tuesday night.
Police said that a truck caught alight after being petrol bombed, while petrol bombs were also hurled at cars travelling on the N2 between Bluewater Bay and Motherwell.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
The violent protests started on Tuesday morning after the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality served eviction notices on people said to be occupying municipal land illegally.
The Head of the Municipality’s Human Settlements Directorate, Nqaba Bhanga, said in terms of the court order the residents had 42 hours to vacate the land before the Municipality steps in.
Police said that the protestors torched an Algoa Bus Company bus, while stoning and damaging a second bus. A bakkie was torched while police said that a petrol bomb was also thrown at an ambulance. There were no reports of any injuries in these incidents.
Charges of public violence and malicious damage to property are now under investigation.
Police said Tuesday evening that reinforcements were called in. There were no immediate reports of any arrests.
