Police in Despatch are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a truck was torched by a group of people on the R75.

Spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, says the driver of a white Nissan UD company truck was driving towards Despatch when he noticed the road was barricaded opposite the Joe Slovo area shortly after midnight on Friday.

She says he stopped and tried to reverse the group had already thrown an item towards his truck which set it alight.

Swart says the driver managed to jump out of the vehicle and fled.

The estimated value of damages amounts to at least R600 000.

She says no arrests have yet been made and police are following up on all possible leads.

Six trucks and three Algoa Buses have been torched in April and not a single arrest has been made.

The hotspot areas are the M17 and Addo road, the R75 Chatty and Swartkops Road and the R335.

Police issued a warning to motorists earlier this month to avoid these areas if possible.

The reason for the ongoing riots is not yet known.
