Arrive Alive
Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, met with truck drivers on Monday who brought the N10 near Middelburg in the Eastern Cape to a standstill since Sunday.
He received a memorandum of grievances from the truckers, who are unhappy with the hiring of foreign nationals as drivers and also have other demands.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Minister Mbalula said that all the parties, being government, truck drivers and small truck operators had committed to a lasting solution within the ambit of the law.
However, the Road Freight Association said freight operators who abide by the Collective Agreement signed with the representatives of truck drivers are being targeted time and again without reason - and this has to stop.
Its CEO Gavin Kelly said Government has promised to resolve the matter of illegal foreigners, in whatever industry, for a number of years - but has not done what was promised.
Meanwhile, protesting truck drivers have blocked the N3 outside Harrismith as they too want the transport minister to address them.
Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says just before midnight, the group of 30 disgruntled drivers lined up their trucks in such a manner that the N3 near the Montrose fuel station, 20 km outside Harrismith was completely cordoned off.
