Truck driver nabbed on N1 transporting abalone worth R9 million

A 26-year-old suspect is in police custody following his arrest on the N1 highway on Thursday with a truck full of abalone worth R9 million.

Police spokesperson Zinzi Hani says police received a tip-off and together with the K9 unit in Boland and officials from the Department of Fisheries and Environmental Affairs made the arrest.

She says the team seized 30 520 units of dried abalone found hidden in a false compartment.

The suspect will appear in the Paarl Magistrates Court on Monday.
