Trollip launches animal care movement

A total of 200 dogs were spayed on Sunday during the launch of Nelson Mandela Bay’s  Mayoral Animal Care Movement.

The R250 000 project, launched at the Motherwell Community Centre, in unit 29,

Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, said in a statement that “the first of its kind for Nelson Mandela Bay and is speared-headed by the Mayor's office, and is supported by different animal welfare organisations locally and from afar.”

The programme involves a number of projects focusing on animal welfare, with the success of Sunday’s mass dog sterilisation going a long way to addressing challenges that include rabies and illegal dog breeding.

“As part of a City-wide rollout plan, the Metro will look at different funding streams to ensure that the success of today's project is replicated throughout the Metro, especially in areas where dog owners cannot afford these kinds of medical services,” Trollip said.

“What today's success has also shown is the love that dog owners have for their dogs as the community hall was packed to capacity from the start of the programme,” he added.

Trollip said the plan is to sterilise a total of 700 dogs throughout the Metro, adding that the launch of the Mayoral Animal Care Movement project is one of the ways of reaffirming “our status as a caring city”.
