Trial awaiting prisoners escape from moving police van


Eastern Cape Police have launched a manhunt for five trial awaiting prisoners who escaped from the back of a police van while in transit.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the suspects were being transported from Court to the Wellington Correctional facility in Mthatha on Tuesday when they managed to escape.

She says Qumbu police officers heard a bang at the back door of the van and when they stopped they were informed by motorists that prisoners were escaping.

The suspects aged between 22 and 27 are in custody for charges ranging from rape, attempted murder and stock theft.

Colonel Naidu says an internal investigation is also underway to investigate the circumstances that led to the escape.

The details of the escapees are as follows:

Malixole Mkhutyukelwa (22) -charged for Contravention of Protection Order and assault GBH.

Mkhanyisi Yonwaba Mkhumbuzi (23) - charged for Rape

Msindisi Rawuzela (28) - charged for Stock Theft

Aphiwe Jikingqina (32) charged with Robbery

Masixole Baleni (27) - charged with attempted murder
