The murder trial against an alleged member of the New Kids gang is underway in the Gqeberha High Court.
Claudio Calvert, 22, allegedly shot and killed Cameron Daniels on 15 July two years ago in Baatjies Street, in Helenvale.
According to the charge sheet, Daniels was walking from Leith Street into Baatjies Street, close to the Helenvale Resource Centre at 09:00.
Calvert is said to have been in the company of another unknown male when they allegedly approached Daniels.
The state alleges that Calvert pulled out a firearm and shot Daniels, who died at the scene.
When the trial started, Calvert pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
During his testimony, he denied killing Daniels and told the court that he considered the deceased a friend.
According to Calvert's testimony, he spent the night before the shooting at his cousin's house, Celestin Valentine.
He said he only left Valentine's residence the next morning, after 10:00 when the shooting had already taken place.
On Friday, Valentine was in the dock giving testimony on behalf of the defense.
He is currently in custody awaiting trial on a different matter.
During his testimony, Valentine confirmed that Calvert had spent the night the night at his home in the company of himself and his two brothers.
He said they watched television, smoked an "occapipe" and went to bed, only to be awoken by Detectives early the next morning.
According to Valentine, the detectives were looking for a person called Bradley Booysen.
When the detectives could not find who they were looking for, they left.
Valentine further said they went back to sleep, and that he woke up again between 08:00 and 09:00.
Calvert was still asleep when he woke up at that time, Valentine testified.
Calvert will contend that he went back to bed and only woke up around 10:00 and that he was nowhere near the crime scene.
The trial continues.
