Transnet Port Terminals mentors male learners

Transnet Port Terminals together with Tracker and the SABC hosted grade 8 to 11 HighSchool learners at the Ngqura Container Terminals in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Terminal managers dedicated the day to mentoring young males learners from three Motherwell High Shools as part of an initiative called "Man in the Making".

During the one day programme learners from Douglas Mbopha, Jolobe High School and Masiphatisane High School were exposed to the work that is done by Transnet Port Termninals.

Ngqura Container Terminal Manager, Noxolo Thabatha, said the initiative aims to empower and develop teenage boys by introducing them to positive role models, providing career advice and exposure to the working world.

"As a company we have an obligation to educate and positively impact the lives of boy children so that they grow up to be responsible citizens and future leaders of our country. TPT already plays a vital role in the growth of our country's economy, but we also strive to positively impact the communities we operate in - particularly empowering and uplifting those that come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through this initiative, our hope is that we can help raise responsible young men by providing them with access to role models, mentors and skills development," she said.

According to Tracker CSI manager, Nolwandle Ntshiza,  the initiative , supported by Department of Basic Education, is designed to be more than a career day by helping teenage boys, between grade 10 and 12, to understand the value of education, overcome obstacles and encourage them to become productive citizens.

"Tracker realises that it takes a village to raise a child and this is why we encourage other companies to join the Men in the Making campaign. Working with our partners the SABC, the Department of Basic Education and numerous corporates we are able to provide an impactful and sustainable programme," she said.
