Transnet National Ports Authority has temporarily lifted its lockout at the Ngqura container terminal in Port Elizabeth.
The National Union of Metalworkers of SA have been on strike for more than six weeks at the terminal over transport allowances, working hours for particular tasks, and the use of labour brokers.
The lifting of the lockout at the terminal will last for 24 hours, from 6am on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.
Terminal Manager, Kheto Nyawase says striking workers who want to return to work can now do so.
Nyawase says Transnet and Numsa remain at loggerheads.
"We are not lifting the lockout, the lockout is still in place. However we just want to cater for the employees that want to come back, and also to encourage the others that want to come back so that they are able to come back to work. So over and above Numsa has yet to exceed to the demands and Transnet is not dropping their demands that they have given to Numsa, so hence the lockout been temporarily suspended for a period of 24 hours." says Nyawase
