Transformation in sport in the Western Cape will come under the spotlight at provincial conference to be held in George early next month.
The Third Western CApe Provincial Conference on Sport will take place at the NMMU George campus on the 10th and 11th of March.
The conference was due to be held last year but was cancelled because of the Fees Must Fall protests.
The conference is being held under the auspices of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the George Municipality, the Eden Sport Council and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
"As 2016 was the Olympic and Paralympic year, it is now an opportune time to review the Western Cape Province's contribution to the sport transformation, its provincial status, and how the Olympics have impacted on sport and sport development. Hence, the conference theme of Olympism, which will seek to link the pathway between the Olympism philosophy, Olympic values and the principles of Olympism," a statement Sunday said.
"The Olympism Theme is further divided into the following sub-themes of Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger), Diversity and Inclusion, Governance, Leadership and Administration and Infrastructure and the role of government," the statement said.
"The delegates to this unique opportunity for the sporting fraternity of Eden and the Western Cape will rub shoulders with the top experts on this theme - the WC MEC for Cultural Affairs & Sport; Me Anroux Marais, Gideon Sam, SASCOC President; Prof Marion Keim, Eminent People's Group for Sport and Transformation in South Africa, councillor Melvin Naik, the Executive Mayor of George and Arthur Cowley, WCPSC Transformation Chairperson. Elroy Gelant, Team SA - Rio Olympic Games and finalist in the 5000m [and proud Eden product!] and Prof Zondi can unfortunately not make it and negotiations are underway to substitute them with as good speakers!"
"The conference also aims to bring together sport managers and sport administrators, coaches, athletes, local government and district and provincial sport federations to foster ties in establishing a strong and unified representation of sport in the Western Cape," the statement said.
