Traffic services grind to a halt in Nelson Mandela Bay

Traffic services have ground to a halt in Nelson Mandela Bay due to a protest by traffic officers.

They've parked their patrol cars with their sirens blaring outside the Wool Exchange Building in Whites Road where an ANC provincial workshop is apparently underway.

The officers have vowed not to leave until they get a satisfactory answer from municipal officials over long overdue payment of overtime pay dating back to 1997.

Municipal official, Chris Jamda, who addressed the angry officers, pleaded for time for internal payment processes to be completed.

"When one is working on a Sunday, he gets a normal time plus 4 hours instead of double time. Remember it is going to be within your shift so they give you 4 hours as per the law, that was never done. We only picked up last year and we got into discussions with managers." says Jamda.

SA Municipal Workers Union shop steward, Lee Nangu, explains why there's been this long-standing pay dispute.

He said the payments are being processed and they're hoping to make the payments by the 9th of March.

"I don't want to address issues that are practically impossible, so hence I'm saying we are going to try our best to make it a point that we are working just before the 9th. Please allow us to work this particular process through, that's my request." says Nangu.
