A female traffic officer who pulled over a car on the N2 in George on Friday morning was shot in the face.
Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says the woman pulled over a vehicle by the Pacaltsdorp Bridge shortly after 9 am as part of a routine check-up.
He says when she approached the vehicle she was confronted by either the driver or one of the passengers who then shot her in the face and disarmed her.
Pojie says they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Police were called to the scene and managed to trace one of the suspects in the Industrial Area of Pacaltsdorp.
Pojie says shots were fired and the suspect was wounded in his knee and arm.
Two firearms were also confiscated.
A manhunt has been launched for the other two suspects.
The officer is currently in the hospital.
Speaking to Algoa FM News from the scene, Pojie said the motive is still unknown.
He says preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects may be from Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Western Cape Transport Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, has condemned the shooting of the female traffic officer.
He said he was on his way to George.
