A senior official in the Eastern Cape Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has been placed on leave amid allegations of rape and sexual abuse.

In a statement on Friday, Premier Oscar Mabuyane said placing the HoD on leave will best serve the government.

He named the official as Thandolwethu Manda, who reportedly faced the allegations on social media.

Mabuyane said he had also appointed “prominent persons” to constitute an investigating panel to look into the allegations.

The panel includes social activist, Petros Majola, Pamela Tshwete and Yvonne Badi”.

“I am calling on all those who have experienced sexual abuse and or harassment in the workplace to use the panel that has been appointed.

“I also call on anyone who has experienced this kind of abuse to report the matter to the police for investigation, ensuring perpetrators face justice,” the Premier added.
