Toddler dies after apparently drinking poison

Police have opened an inquest docket after a one-and-a-half year old girl from Smutsville in Sedgefield died on Wednesday after drinking poison from a cool drink bottle.

The toddler mistakenly drank toxic chemicals and started showing signs of distress in the early hours of the morning.

The child was taken to a Knysna Hospital and transferred to the George Provincial Hospital where she died.

A post-mortem will be conducted and police are investigating the case.
