Three suspects have been arrested on the N2 highway near Knysna for the illegal possession of abalone with an estimated value of R46 000.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies says members of the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Unit received information on Friday about a Ford Focus that was enroute to Cape Town with a consignment of abalone.

He says the vehicle was spotted near the turn-off to Kwanokuthula and a high-speed chase ensued but it was brought to a stop just outside Knysna.

Spies says the car was searched and police confiscated seven bags of abalone.

He says the three occupants, aged 31, 32 and 34 were arrested at the scene and they will appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on Monday.
