PORT ELIZABETH, December 5 (ANA) – Three men charged with the murder of a man who was almost castrated during the alleged attack, appeared in the Port Elizabeth High Court on Monday.
The murder trial of Jean Uithaler, 20, Khawulelani Gqunta, 19, and Sinethemba Mfihlo, 19, is yet to get underway.
According to the State, during June 2014, Quinton Williams, a warder at St Albans Prison, was on his way home from a tavern in Booysens Park and was followed by the three men.
They tripped Williams and then demanded money from him but when he couldn’t produce any, the men started to assault him with stones and bricks.
The men stabbed Williams several times and attempted to castrate him.
“Whilst the deceased was lying down, one of the accused undressed the deceased of his pair of trousers and attempted to cut off his penis with a knife,” the indictment reads.
The men are facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. They have not yet pleaded to the charges against them.
During court proceedings on Monday it became apparent that Uithaler’s lawyer intended to bring an application for a mental observation to be conducted.
The case was postponed until Tuesday.
