Three in court Monday in connection with EC taxi violence

Three suspects arrested in connection with recent taxi violence in the Eastern Cape appeared in court on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, said Masixole Mgcotyelwa, (18), Mzwandile Mgcotyelwa, (67) and Mongameli Mgcotyelwa (29) appeared at Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court on charges of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as being in possession of dangerous weapons.

She said all three were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on 29 March 2017.

Mills said another four suspects appeared in the same court last Friday.

She said the case against Mongameli Mgcotyelwa, (29), Zozi Mncedisi, (32), Themabalethu Gwana, (30) and Mzwandile Mgcotyelwa, (67), was postponed to 5 April.

They were remanded in custody.

The seven suspects were arrested on 24 March by a police task team in Port St Johns and Libode.

Mills said the arrests came after two people were killed and eight were seriously injured during taxi violence which broke out recently at the Ntlanza taxi rank near Ngqeleni.

During the arrests police seized three motor vehicles, one 303 rifle, 25 rounds of ammunition, one home-made gun, bush knives as well as pangas and other sharp instruments as well as a licenced pistol, Mills said.
