Police in Gqeberha called on communities to refrain from illegally connecting electricity after three people lost their lives this weekend.

Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said an 18-year-old girl became the latest victim when she stepped on an illegal connection while walking with friends in an open space on Auburn Street in Booysens Park early Sunday morning.

She said a male friend tried to help but after he also received a shock he moved away.

Naidu also said two other people were killed on Saturday as a result of illegal connections.

A 24-year-old woman died in Rabie Village in Wells Estate after touching an illegal connection.  That incident happened at around 9 pm.

In the other incident in the early hours of Saturday morning, a homeowner in Kuyga in Greenbushes woke up at around 2 am to the dogs barking.

Naidu said the woman went to investigate and found her tenant lying on the roof of the outbuilding with “wires in his hands.”

“It is suspected that the 26-year-old man was attempting to connect electricity to his flatlet when he was electrocuted,” she said.

Inquest dockets were opened in all three cases.
