Gqeberha police arrested three suspects following a crime spree that ended in a high-speed chase and crash on the M4 freeway on Thursday morning.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the suspects are believed to have been responsible for several street robberies in the SAPS Humewood and Mount Road policing areas since Tuesday.

She said according to information the alleged robbers were driving around the city in a white VW Polo with no number plates and robbing people on the streets of their cell phones and valuables.

Naidu said an alert was issued and at around 09.40, the vehicle was spotted by SAPS Mount Road Task Team members on the M4 freeway.

“The vehicle was travelling at high speed and a police chase ensued  through the streets of Sydenham, Sidwell, and New Brighton.”

She said Gqeberha K9 unit members provided backup and after a 10-minute chase, the driver of the VW  Polo lost control and crashed into the railway line and a boundary wall in Eveready Road, New Brighton.

“As the three suspects got out of the vehicle and attempted to flee, two were arrested by the Task Team members, while the third suspect was apprehended by K9 ‘Goliath’.”

Naidu said the trio, aged 20, 21, and 25, were detained and several cell phones and personal items believed to be stolen property as well as the vehicle were confiscated.

“A replica firearm believed to have been used to commit the robberies was also found in the vehicle. The suspects are expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate court on Monday. Detectives are busy probing their possible link to several cases,” Naidu said.
