Thousands of teaching posts in EC could be cut

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says the provincial education department could potentially cut more than 11-thousand teaching posts from the system for the 2013 school year.

DA MPL, Edmund van Vuuren, says this is due to a shortfall of R3.42b to fund the 64 752 teaching posts currently budgeted for in 2012.

He says this information was presented to the legislature's Education Committee by Superintendent General Mthunywa Ngonzo this week.

Van Vuuren says besides Provincial Treasury's planned one percent cut in budgets for all Departments in 2013/2014, the Education Department also faces a R1.6b penalty from National Treasury for not implementing Collective Agreement 2 of 2003 between unions and government.
