Thousands of hectares of land destroyed in Oudtshoorn veldfires

The veldfires that have been raging in the Paardebond area near Oudtshoorn have already damaged more than 100  000 hectares of land.

The fires started on Saturday and ave been fanned by extreme heat and strong winds.

Louise Karsten reports that fire fighters are keeping a watchful eye over the situation and that the fires are currently under control.

Five hundred ostriches were removed from the Saffraanriver farm but game that includes various species of antelope was trapped between the raging flames.

In the mean time three separate fires started in the Langeberg, Waboomskraal and Gourits area.

Extreme heat and strong wind fuelled the flames on. Nearly two hundred people from the Eden District Municipality and the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association is involved in the fire fighting operation. Although there have been no casualties farmers suffered great damage to their grazing.

A Fixed wing bomber was used to drop water over the Gourits area.
