A total of 774 839 twenty-foot containers were handled at the Port of Ngqura last year, according to figures released by the Transnet National Ports Authority.
This is an increase of more than 214 000 containers on the previous year.
Metrominute reports that the total volume of cargo handled by the port last year also increased significantly by 2.96 million tonnes to 10.53 million tonnes.
The Port of Port Elizabeth also experienced growth in terms of volumes, handling 12.33 million tonnes of cargo last year compared to 11.21 million tonnes the previous year.
The total volume of cargo handled at East London was marginally down last year at 2.22 million tonnes from 2.47 million tonnes in 2012.
