Thirteen people, including nine children, were injured when two marquees collapsed during a World Fisheries Day event at Humansdorp on Saturday.
Agriculture, fisheries, and forestry ministry minister Senzeni Zokwana's spokesperson Bomikazi Molapo said in a statement that it was not clear what led to the incident but that government would investigate.
The Eastern Cape coastline was battered by strong winds and driving rain during the day.
Those injured sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Humansdorp hospital.
Zokwana and Eastern Cape rural development and agrarian reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane, who addressed the crowds at the local stadium, apologised to those present.
They also later visited the injured children who were treated at the local hospital’s outpatient section - before being discharged.
