Third Fort Hare University student dies at Alice campus

A male student at Fort Hare University has died a week after being hit over the head by another student in a residence at the Alice campus.

In a statement, the University said that Siphumle Nazo died in East London’s Frere Hospital on Saturday after being hit over the head with an iron bar.

Fort Hare said his assailant, whose name is being withheld, has been arrested and is in police custody.

“A range of support services will be provident to the family as per university policy,” said Director for Institutional Advancement, Tandi Mapukata.

“The university is doing all in its powers to discourage student-on-student violence and is in consultation with provincial authorities to devise methodologies to improve campus safety and prevent acts of violence on university property,” she said.

Nazo’s death was the third at Fort Hare’s Alice campus since the beginning of the 2020 academic year.
