Ten taxi associations in Nelson Mandela Bay say they are committed to following the directive given by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the Covid-19 national lockdown.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Taxi Association General Secretary, Andile Andries says this means that there will be no taxi shut down in the Bay on Wednesday.
Andries says the different taxi associations had a meeting earlier on Tuesday where this resolution was taken.
He says taxis will also operate within the hours stipulated by Government.
Earlier on Tuesday, SANTACO’s coordinator in Tshwane, Thabo Moila promised to shut down all taxi’s in the North Gauteng municipal area due to government’s restrictions.
Moila told taxi drivers in Hammanskraal that the restrictions had a negative impact on their business due to the fact that taxis are not allowed to be fully loaded due to Covid-19 restrictions.
SANTACO, however, later confirmed on their official Twitter account that they will continue providing services as they believe there can never be a bigger problem than Covid-19.
They urged their structures to continue delivering services.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says a joint media briefing will be held on Wednesday with SANTACO as well as the National Prosecuting Authority.
He says certain directives first need to be Gazetted.
