There will be consequences for teachers found guilty of corporal punishment

The Eastern Cape Department of Education says corpral punsihment has long been abolished in South Africa and if anyone is found guilty of the crime there will be consequences.

This follows a recent incident where a teacher reportedly lashed 13 high school girls at Hlomisa Senior Secondary school in Mqanduli.

A video of the incident titled 'Busting Abusive Teachers in South Africa' later went viral across social networks causing an uproar.

Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima says investigators are being sent to the school.

"The Department will send some investigators to investigate what happened at the school. If anyone is found guilty there should be a punishment, because in South Africa corporal punishment has been abolished. We also need to ensure that the people whom we put in charge of the learners also abide with the policies of the department" he said

Police spokesperson, Major Zamukulunhisa Jozana says at this stage no criminal charges have been laid.
