Temp teachers to be employed permanently by Friday

The Eastern Cape Education Department has announced that 89% of temporary teachers will be employed permanently by this Friday.

The Department said it reached a collective agreement with the Education Labour Relation Council to permanently employ 2 382 teachers.

The agreement states that in addition, there will also be transfers of excess teachers to other schools where they are needed in the province.

Education Department superintendent general Lawrence Ngonzo says the move will improve results and ensure stability in the department.

Meanwhile the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has welcomed the agreement.

Committee chairperson Hope Malgas, hailed this as a major milestone for education in the province which will ensure basic education to all learners.

Malgas says this will lead to effective learning and teaching that in turn leads to quality education.
