The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that 391 temporary teachers in the Eastern Cape have not been paid and will be owed R72.1m by the end of March next year.
Minister Angie Motshekga made the startling revelation in a reply to a parliamentary question by the Democratic Alliance.
DA member in the National Council of Province, Michael de Villiers, says the non-payment of temporary teachers' salaries in the Eastern Cape is by no means a new occurrence.
He says in June, Motshekga had to be forced by the courts to pay teachers' salaries.
In August she also revealed that as of 30 April this year, 233 temporary teachers appointed in January 2013 were owed R258.5m and 1 217 teachers appointed from April 2013 were owed more than R330-million.
