Police divers have recovered the body of a teenager who drowned in a dam on the Garden Route.
The National Sea Rescue Institute said that the NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated at around 14h20 on Friday, following a request for assistance from Police at Pacaltsdorp.
“Our NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene in their private vehicles and on arrival on the scene the SA Police Services, George Fire and Rescue Services, ER24 ambulance services, WC Government Health EMS and a Police Dive Unit were in attendance,” said Wilderness NSRI station commander, Robert van Helsdingen.
He said a police diver and two of NSRI rescue swimmers waded into the water in a sweeping line search in two-meter-deep water in the dam located near Pacaltsdorp.
“The body of the teenager was located and recovered from under the water,” said Van Helsdingen.
“Sadly paramedics declared the teenager deceased and the body of the teenager has been taken into the care of police and the forensic pathology services.”
Police have opened an inquest docket.
