An East London police couple charged with rape and failing to report a sexual offence against a 14-year-old girl has had their trial postponed to May in the East London High Court.
The 50-year-old policeman and the 34-year-old policewoman, who is also the mother of the young girl, were staying in police barracks in the city when the alleged rape happened on various occasions between 2018 and 2021.
The couple, who are now out on R2000 bail, and warning respectfully, sat apart in the dock on Friday, as the teenager testified via a TV monitor about the abuse she allegedly endured.
According to a summary of the substantial facts, the offences were committed between December 2018 and August 2021.
The papers said the child also reported the incidents to her mother who said would confront the accused, but never did so.
The child eventually reported the rape to her aunt who informed the authorities.
Judge Thembekile Malusi postponed the matter to 15 May for the continuation of the girl’s testimony.
