A 15-year-old East London girl died a gruesome death when a mob set fire to her parent’s home in Reeston on Thursday.
Police said that about 500 people descended on the home of the local ANC councilor, Portia Matiwane, and set it alight.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Hazel Mqala, said that “a 15-year-old girl was found burnt inside the house.”
She said the city councilor was not at home at the time of the attack on Thursday afternoon.
The motive for the attack on the councilors home could be a sequel to the court appearance of the woman’s husband for the double murder of two women who were shot near and dumped near Buffalo Pass Road on Tuesday.
Fifty-seven-year-old Mabutho Matiwane, faces two charges of murder and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
Matiwane was arrested for allegedly shooting dead one woman and critically wounded a second woman. She was able to crawl to the road where she was found by a traffic officer.
She died in hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to reports the woman was able to provide police with good information that led to the arrest of Matiwane.
The Daily Dispatch reported that the murders could be linked to a jobs for cash deal that the ANC councilor had allegedly entered into with one of the murdered women.
