Teacher-shortage crises spreads to Bedford

Teachers at Templeton High School in Bedford, met parents and pupils on Wednesday morning to discuss the current crisis at the school.

These include a teacher shortage, and the payment of temporary teachers.

The head of the school governing body, Thabiso Makawu, told Algoa FM that the situation had reached a point where teachers no longer wanted to do their work.

"For the first time in the history of this school teachers had to say no thy are not going to class, this is how extreme it is, even the teachers who are being paid say they feel guilty accepting their salaries while their colleagues are not getting even half of what they are supposed to be getting" Makawu said.

The school has 626 pupils and only 12 teachers are being paid by the Department of Education.
