Tuberculosis was the leading under-lying natural cause of death in the Eastern Cape in 2010, according to figures released by Statistics South Africa on Thursday - with 12.7% of deaths attributed to the disease.
The second leading cause of death in the Eastern Cape was various forms of heart disease at 4.6%.
A total of 3.1% of deaths were attributed to HIV, with Cacadu having the highest rate of 5.8%.
TB was listed as the leading cause of death in both metros in the Eastern Cape as well as in the other six district municipalities.
