Taxi driver who collided with NMU students granted bail

Phiwokuhle Mothemela

The Gqeberha mini-bus driver who is accused of crashing into a group of students at Nelson Mandela University two weeks ago has been granted bail in the magistrates' court.

Twenty-four-year-old Sinovuyo Lindi faces charges of culpable homicide, attempted murder, drunken and reckless driving, failure to stop after an accident, and the failure to render assistance at an accident scene.

This is after his vehicle crashed into a group of students, killing one and injuring 10 others, following the annual Freshers’ Carnival on campus.

Lindi told the court, through his defence attorney, that he intends to plead not guilty to the charges against him.

He was granted bail of R1500 with strict conditions: He must report twice a week to the KwaDwesi police station, not drink alcohol, and not drive a vehicle until the matter is finalised.

State prosecutor Callum Barlow told the court that the state did not oppose the bail application as Lindi was a first-time offender and had no pending cases against him.

The matter was remanded to the 24 June for further investigation.
