Talks to end WSU strike underway

The Director-General of Higher Education and Training, Gwebin-kundla Qonde is meeting with embattled Walter Sisulu University's management negotiation team and labour unions on Thursday.

He joins the two parties who have been negotiating since Monday in an attempt to end the seven week old strike.

Qonde's statement last week that said WSU staff were among the highest paid tertiary workers in the country, resulted in a backlash by the unions.

The university's Nehawu and Nteu unions are demanding an 8% to 10% wage hike, while management has offered 4.25%.

Last week WSU management closed all four campuses and instructed all students to vacate residences and other university accommodation because it said it could not guarantee the safety of the students.
